"I had picked a small bowl full of blackberries and wanted to make jam with them. This only makes 1 pint and uses 3 cups of berries. Remember jam is softer than jelly. From Linda Ziedrich's The Joy of Jams, Jellies and other Sweet Preserves."

directions

  • In a non-reactive pan, mash the blackberries with a potato masher. Add the sugar and heat the contents over medium heat, stirring gently, until the sugar is dissolved. Raise the heat to medium-high and boil the mixture until a drop mounds in a chilled dish (this took around 10 minutes for me).
  • Pour the jam into a jar and cap the jar tightly. Store in refrigerator. This jam should keep for several weeks.

  1. Thank you for a simple small batch recipe. I made a large batch w/ pectin last year. This year we didn't get as many blackberries when we picked. I had maybe 4.5 cups blackberries w/ less than a handful of tart blueberries thrown in there. I used 2 cups sugar and cooked maybe 12min when the directions said approx 10min. It came out wonderful! So glad this is our 3rd year making blackberry jam since these berries are to tart to do anything else w/ them I get to enjoy them on toast and scones all year! Thank you! I made almost 3- 8oz jars, but I still have some from last year! Thank you for a simple and small recipe! Made again a week later I had 3 cups blackberries and 2 cups blueberries, I used a food mill on the blackberries which left a half cup of waste/seeds. So it was probably again 4.5 cups berries and I did 1 & 3/4 cups of sugar and ended up w/ exactly 3-8oz jars. Thanks we love this recipe!

  2. Delicious and not overly sweet, like many jam recipes. I was happy to make a small quantity of it, because I only had about 3 cups of berries. I made a second time with 4.5 cups blackberries and 1 cup of sugar. I initially boiled the berries and sugar for 10 minutes, let cool and strained out the seeds. Then I brought to a boil until the mixture rose to 220 degrees F. I then poured into sterilized jars (boiled in cold water for 10 minutes) and boiled for 10 more minutes. It filled 2 small jars.

  4. This worked very well for me. I had 5 cups of blackberries so I adapted the recipe in the following way. Since I was making 1.6 times the recipe, I entered that number in the box at the top to find out how much sugar to add. Also put in juice of half a lime to help with setting. Boiled about 10 to 11 minutes. Excellent! Thanks for posting.

  5. I love how easy this recipe is to do! Also that it uses no pectin, less sugar, and there's no canning equipment to mess with. Simple and tastes great. Made for Name That Ingredient.

I have two boys who will usually eat most things I put in front of them. As a single mom I use them as my guinea pigs....sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I have a huge garden, blueberry and blackberry bushes. I am always looking for a new recipe. I have three cats (Xiao Mao, which means little cat in Chinese, Pumpkin and Max) and two border collies, Lucy and Grace. All my animals come from Rescue Agencies. <a href="http://s89.photobucket.com/albums/k217/winecoff8902/?action=view¤t=rsc002.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k217/winecoff8902/rsc002.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k217/winecoff8902/lucyatpoppys005.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"><a href="http://s89.photobucket.com/albums/k217/winecoff8902/?action=view¤t=006.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k217/winecoff8902/006.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><a href="http://s89.photobucket.com/albums/k217/winecoff8902/?action=view¤t=hilfiger001.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k217/winecoff8902/hilfiger001.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">
